Paediatric Nephrologist/General Paediatrician

Prof Jeff Fletcher is a qualified Paediatric Kidney Specialist (Paediatric nephrologist) and General paediatrician and has worked in public system for 15 years in rural, remote, regional and tertiary hospitals. Jeff also has a special interest and clinical and laboratory research background in genetics of kidney diseases, neonatal kidney disease and complex ADHD and behavioural problems in children. He is always seeking to improve the delivery of healthcare to children.

Jeff’s passion is to ensure that all kids receive the care they need and will support kids and families accessing the medical care, as well as educational and additional supports needed to strive and reach their goals socially, academically and personally. Jeff has highly developed skills over the last 10 years in managing chronic and complex children of all ages and engaging with other sub-specialist paediatricians as needed. He is comfortable seeing any child that he is asked to see be it a 2-day old baby with feeding issues and concerned parents through to a teenager with education and behavioural needs, a child with chronic kidney failure or pre and post kidney transplant and all that is in between when it comes to children’s health. Jeff comes with the knowledge, patience, compassion and care to support each and every individual child and family.

As a paediatric nephrologist Jeff will happily manage all things related to the kidneys, bladder and toileting and review any child from 0-18 years with chronic kidney disease (CKD), end stage kidney disease, pre- and post-kidney transplant, all forms of glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, isolated haematuria and proteinuria, urinary incontinence with daytime and/or night time wetting, dysfunctional voiding, encopresis and constipation. With a special interest also in genetics, genomics, chronic and complex care and behavioural paediatrics Jeff will also happily review any child with these conditions and ensures he provides compassionate, collaborative care for the child and family.

As a clinician scientist, Jeff has a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in paediatric genetic kidney disease and is one of the founding members of the Australasian Registry of Rare and Genetic Kidney Disease (ARRK) and KidGen Collaborative. He is a member of the Neonatal Kidney Collaborative (NKC) which is an international research group looking at improving kidney related outcomes in premature babies. Jeff is the Co-Chair for the rural and regional stream of the National Standards of Care for Childhood-onset Heart Disease Advisory Group. He is an advisory group member on the genomics workforce development in NSW Health and development of education packages for paediatricians on genomic testing for childhood developmental syndromes.

We welcome Jeff and his skills as a paediatric nephrologist general paediatrician with special interest in genetic renal disease and genomics. Jeff will be commencing two days per week on a Monday and Tuesday from the 19 th July 2021. Jeff’s ultimate goal is to provide paediatric nephrology telehealth services when and where they are needed including throughout rural and regional NSW, the ACT and rural and regional Queensland.
